Player Profile: nGenMaFia

“One morning at 5 a.m. I logged on to play ladder. I remember running into mOOnGLaDe, who was virtually unbeatable at the time, and it was such an honor to be matched up against him. I lost so badly in that game… but that’s also when I realized that I wanted to really improve.”

The Competitive Spirit
Timothy “MaFia” He is no newbie when it comes to competition. MaFia was a competitive Magic: The Gathering player who managed to clinch two championships when he was just 16 years old. Not only that, but he also placed third in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, winning a cool $320,000 at the tender age of 18.
However, MaFia has now turned his attention to StarCraft II. Not only is MaFia well-known for having the most 1v1 games in the Grandmaster League -- a feat rivaled only by his teammate Light -- he also has two smurf accounts that are also in the same prestigious league.
The RTS Newbie
With his intense love for the game, people might expect that MaFia was an old school StarCraft: Brood War player -- but they'd be surprised. “I had a lot of hobbies in the past, but StarCraft II is my first RTS game. I wasn’t waiting for it to come out like most people were; I only got the game two months after it came out.”
MaFia was introduced to the game by his friends from World of Warcraft. He was convinced to try the game with the use of a Guest Pass and they dived into a 2v2 team game. MaFia found the game extremely enjoyable to play and delved into the world of 1v1 -- discovering a natural talent. “After playing my five placement matches I went straight to Platinum and Diamond was the highest at that time -- then I never looked back.”
Dedication without Limits
MaFia would clock more than eight hours of playing time a day in an ongoing effort to improve his play. MaFia also plays many 1v1 custom games to practice specific strategies or builds to refine his game. “I still spend pretty much my whole day playing, and despite being in the top ranks of SEA, I feel like I still need to improve a lot more.”
Being one of the first few, if not the first, players to get the Kerrigan icon on SEA, MaFia continues to impress. While his image is that of a ladder warrior, his opponents might beg to differ. Many of the active gamers in SEA know that MaFia places better in LAN events than online. This might be attributed to MaFia playing at a very high ping. “I spent the first few months laddering with 350ms ping and thought it was normal! So when I went to my first LAN I was amazed on how fast it was. (Laughs) I upgraded my Internet after that.”
With all his dedication, practice, and the ability to play at a high level no matter what the conditions, MaFia is a player to watch in this tournament.
