This week, we’re analyzing:
Morale - How do you get yourself back on track after a losing streak? How do you avoid making mistakes due to overconfidence after a series of wins? What do you do to get yourself psyched up before a game? Strategy, tactics, and skill. At the heart of StarCraft II are the legion of skilled tacticians and brilliant strategists leading armies of zerg, protoss, and terrans to war across the scarred battlefields of the Koprulu Sector. Knowledge is power; the greatest commanders throughout history earned their victories not merely by virtue of strategic brilliance, but also by applying themselves to rigorous study of warfare and the tactics used by those who fought before them. You too can tap into this valuable resource, and that’s where StarCraft Art of War comes in. Are you a veteran player? Are you new to StarCraft II and striving to improve your skills? In this weekly feature, we invite players of all skill levels to ask questions, share their tactics, post replays, and provide advice for understanding, executing and defeating today’s most popular strategies. Don’t forget to up-vote forum posts that you find on-topic and helpful! Art of War Rules:

Click the button.
I used to have ladder anxiety before I did my first 5 placements. When I clicked that button, I was a train-wreck. I expected to play poorly and lose all of my games. It turned out that I wasn't as completely terrible as I thought I was, and proceeded to win four of those five games. Once I realised that "Hey. You win some, you lose some", I could click that button without worry or panic. The reason I don't ladder often now is not because of ladder anxiety, but rather lack of motivation to ladder.

I find that when I go on tilt I start making stupid mistakes I wouldn't have otherwise made. That annoys me because I end up losing games that I should have won, and I lose to cheese.
Click the button. I don't have ladder anxiety per se, because I play the games anyway. What I'm afraid of is being demoted back to platinum league, after all this work to get to Diamond. It annoys me whenever I lose to a platinum player, not because he played better but because I made a stupid mistake. |
what I do when I'm on a losing streak is rest first, clear my hot-head or be an obs on a practice game. I also watch my lost game replays to study them and correct them on my next game. And I also rest myself when I'm on a winning streak to clear my head of overconfidence. |
I did.... Then, I took a loosing streak. ._. |

Losing is pretty much the only power you have over the game - especially in team games where balancing is pretty much non-existent, and match-ups are wildly inconsistent (tonight my silver-bronze team were pitched against platinum - this is a regular feature of Blizzard's system). This breeds frustration; frustration leads to annoyance; annoyance leads to morale in the gutter..
People get frustrated at the game because A.) it doesn't answer back, B.) cannot be reasoned with, and C.) cannot receive expressions of concern. In other words, it is impervious to individual angst - and the Blizzard team are hopeless at giving feedback TO the feedback, which compounds the sense of isolation and personal deficiency. So, morale can be boosted by first regaining a sense of empowerment. The loss of morale comes from putting so much time and effort into something that returns zero results. Particularly in team games where losing streaks can be 10+ games in a row, not to mention drop-outs etc. Keeping morale up is to cease caring about winning or losing. Recognising (at least in team play) that the fault is not one's own, that the game relies on huge dosages of luck and is properly unbalanced - at least in team games (and those who argue otherwise in a 4v4 context are dishonest, naive, stupid - or wicked). It's about directing feelings to an appropriate target. I have a 25% win rate - on a good day - and usually less. But this does not stop me from being pitched against plats, diamonds, and occasionally master-league teams. Angst, anger, etc. (all the destructive emotions) need to be aimed at Blizzard. It's an enormously cathartic experience, and produces a much happier state of mind, ergo, a moral boost! |

I play a custom melee game or a few. Sometimes there are lower leagues players, meaning I can mess around and make mistakes, plus there's no win/loss record.
After versing lots of low players (boring) and high players (hopeless) I generally slide back to the ladder, where everyone is around my level and every game I begin has a 50% win chance, which I find is far more fun to play in the long run. Not to mention monobattles or a good tower D or tug of war custom game.

Don't play once you have more than 4 loss streak.
If you get addicted and keep playing you get this : http://sea.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/219191/1/iRLEstancia/matches |
Don't play once you have more than 4 loss streak. +1 that is so true!! I get that bad habit of trying to win at least once before logging off which often cost me to loose 2-3 match more before winning... there should be a section on the starcraft forum about the psychology to get and avoid when playing a match up imo... |

Losing Streak
- stop playing for awhile and watch more pros playing to learn new stuffs - Rewatch my games few times to find out where I have made mistake & not repeat those stupid ones... Winning Streak - Play extra 1-2 games that day - Also rewatch my games why I won and try to find out how my opponent can win me if i m on his shoe :) last of all, having fun is most important regardless of lose or win (surely winning all my games would be better LOL) |

still trying to find out a better answer to control the ladder anxiety specially after Losing Streak ... i guess more u play.. more exp u get and ur able to control/stabilize you anxiety.
new players will always have this issue unless they have a really controlled temperament. |
|
Many refer to this as "E-Sports" , and I think it makes sense, especially on this subject. There is such thing called "off nights", and it does not only happen to physical sports but e-sports as well.
To cope up, I usually stop playing a few hours, rethink why I lost , because in most cases, it is only due to over confidence, or forgetting the fundamentals or the necessities. |
still trying to find out a better answer to control the ladder anxiety specially after Losing Streak ... i guess more u play.. more exp u get and ur able to control/stabilize you anxiety. oh...you are quite wrong with that =D playing more will not solve your anxiety =D Actually, its the other way around. The LESS you play, the LESS you care, the LESS anxiety you will have =D So the solution, take a break and play another game (or Custom Games! Playing StarBattle never gets old for me =D). Then go back to SC2 (if you fell like it...noone is pushing you to play SC2 only) and rethink your strat =D |

whenever i decide i want to play some sc2 i find myself playing one game and either rage quitting because some noob just void rushed me or rine rushed or 6 pooled and i end up breaking something like a mirror,tv,monitor.
or i find a complete noob that i crush in 7 minutes and play another match. Trying different strategies is a good idea. your whats wrong with starcraft 2. cheap stupid wins that dont benefit anybody. |

"Failure is the key to success."
This is the quote I keep in mind when on a losing streak. I also look through my replays, and those of higher level players such as IMNesTea to optimise my build for next time. Moreover, I have recently started is to play the races I would not usually play. This way I consolidate my understanding of how the races work and continue to change my gameplay to increase my skilll and climb the ladder. |
