Hi all,

I've posted this to get advice and constructive feedback on Terran v.s. Protoss late game unit compositions. This is not a balance / theory crafting / QQ rant, just an opportunity to find out what I can do better.

I'm currently a silver league Terran player. I ususally go MMM against Protoss players, opening standard and taking as early an expo as I feel safe getting.

This match in particular I focussed on getting good upgrade timings, which led to an edge against the late Protoss army (4 additional upgrades above the other player when the confrontation occurred). However, my bio melted and his units were barely scratched. Vikings and Medivacs seemed more detrimental to my army value rather than helpful. I believe my bio was mostly Marauders. What could I have done better? Any advice is welcome.

Here is where the replay can be found:

Thank you for your time and replies!

Ok I watched you're replay

I'll start by saying this toss did open very well, after that it was soso.
You did well enough in you're opening but then the gloss seems to disappear.
You knew he had 1 gate expo up so zealot stalker stalker then whatever or close enough by that point.
You attacked with a small force that died and was never going to do much more than what it did, take the shields off 1 stalker and kill a zealot. Not a good trade and you left it there too die and put him in front of units lost.

After that both macroed, you got you're medivacs and he spent 600 minerals on static base defense at his ramp.................
You did a good drop killed the forge, stopped a upgrade but then left them there 2 die to his army not a good trade but the right idea.
Pick the army up and take them home before the army gets there and you win, even better and what you should have been doing all game is dropping behind the naturals mineral line and anywhere else his slow army could not reach in time.

The naturals minerl line is such a great area on that spawn location and in general, close to you're and base squeeshy probes and miles away from his 600 mineral static base defense.

After that you killed some of his probes that went for a walk outside his base.

After that you did another drop and lost more marauders vikings for nothing and that finally that caused him to push out with his colo army that was bigger than your army and the attack angle helped him a lot 2.

So from what I know as a toss who hates Terran, you NEED to drop from around 10 min on non stop and kill his economy and everything else you can.
You MUST save the drop army and keep using it to drop again and again and again.
You had 8 medivacs which seems high to me especially with the number of actual units you had but I'm not a T player so I don't know 4 sure.
You should be trying to do multiple location drops and keeping your army alive.

That's really why the toss won that in my opinion.
Go back into the game, open the units lost tab and watch what happened in every fight. If you picked up you're units, if you scouted differently.
The passive way the Protoss played you would not have lost 1 unit at all. You lost 29ish 2725 units for cheaply and for really only 1 forge kill.

For you I recommend just practicing drops get them in and get them out!!!!!
Then practice 2 drops in two locations at once.Minor things I think you needed more production as well your money went high and your 3rd maybe should go somewhere else as it's expanding towards the opponent which in general is a bad idea if you can avoid it.

Hope that helps I don't think you're far off beating that toss at all, he was just very passive and you kept throwing him units to eat.

Good luck in the future >.<

Thanks for the reply! Really useful information in your post, I realise now that even if his army was superior, I could have still won if I committed more time to microing my drops correctly and also saving units / caring more about what happened to them.

I am also unsure about my composition - the medivac numbers did seem to high. Maybe if I switch mmore of them to vikings and did more dmg to the colos. Anyway thanks again, I really appreciate the input and time spent analysing my replay, cheers :D

I think your vikings got supply blocked at one point, mmmvg is the combo but remember it's not really for direct head to head combat but rather picking away with emp's and getting the right angle with vikings to take out colo quickly.

And you're very welcome and I'm glad the info helped >.<

You can beat a Protoss deathball with MMMVG - you need to understand the engagement and the effect of all units involved. I'll explain it later if I can be bothered (it will require a fair bit of typing).

For now - your composition is bad. You want more marines and less mauraders. This is another common terran mistake - marines are the single best units in this matchup for DPS, but again, they are really only effective if you understand the engagements and how to use them (talking GM level now). Most terrans go marauder heavy due to their high hp, but if you have control and understanding of the engagement, you should have 3x the number of marines than you have marauders.
