This week, we’re talking:
Making A Come Back - In this week’s Art of War, we’re doing something a little different. Share a story about a match where you snatched victory from the jaws of defeat (or when an opponent did the same to you!) Can you identify the turning point? Share replays if you’ve got ‘em! Strategy, tactics, and skill. At the heart of StarCraft II are the legion of skilled tacticians and brilliant strategists leading armies of zerg, protoss, and terrans to war across the scarred battlefields of the Koprulu Sector. Knowledge is power; the greatest commanders throughout history earned their victories not merely by virtue of strategic brilliance, but also by applying themselves to rigorous study of warfare and the tactics used by those who fought before them. You too can tap into this valuable resource, and that’s where StarCraft Art of War comes in. Are you a veteran player? Are you new to StarCraft II and striving to improve your skills? In this weekly feature, we invite players of all skill levels to ask questions, share their tactics, post replays, and provide advice for understanding, executing and defeating today’s most popular strategies. Don’t forget to up-vote forum posts that you find on-topic and helpful! Art of War Rules:

I once was against a zerg opponent and i tried to do a SCV rush on his base i utterly failed and i had only a few workers left while he had about 10 and i had about 5. He was completely overpowering me with his advantage in economy, his forces. So i was patient and kept fending his attacks off until i had time to breathe and he gave up attacking me and was building up a huge force to defend when i attacked him. Obviously i had no choice but to attack so i had to think smart so i layed a few scanner sweeps in his base and i saw a huge flaw in his defence plan, his main base was completely unprotected and he had his whole force defending his natural he was expecting me to come to his main base from the ramp in second base. So i quickly got a decent MMM force and dropped to his main base and took his whole army from the back on his second base and i won. I'll never forget that match. Is there a way to upload a replay so i can show you guys.

Played a game today RvR where I rolled Protoss and my opponent rolled Zerg, he wouldn't tell me his race, which was pretty BM, but I told him mine anyway because I'm not a douche. Protoss vs Random when your opponent rolls Zerg is pretty close to auto-loss if you play it safely and your opponent isn't hopeless, so I would normally be pretty boned, luckily I didn't play safe, II went balls-to-the wall Nexus 1st, pylon on the high-ground. If he'd early-pooled I'd have been ok because I scouted him first (on Shakuras), vs Terran I'd have been ok (FFE vs Terran is actually amazing, if he get's gas it's tough, but winnable) and if he'd been Protoss I'd just have lost horribly assuming he knew how to a-move and build a zealot and or 4-gate.
Anyway, he goes for an old-school nydus-bust in my main, I scouted an all-in and built a few extra cannons - at my front. When I heard the nydus I crapped my pants, lost a bunch of probes and my main. The three canons were close enough to the ramp that my probe micro was able to keep me from dying immediately, but I messed up throwing down a emergency pylon funnel at the bottom of my main ramp which would have forced all his units to fight my cannons, instead his lings slipped into my mineral line. I ended up with about 20-odd probes but his lings had retreated and my sim-city meant coming down the ramp meant he would fight sentry-zealot-canon very cost-ineffectively. +1 attack was done so after a cleaning up his nydus worm (and most of his units thanks to +1 zealot-sentry vs unmicroed roach-ling) I went on the attack. I transitioned into a 4-gate and laid down a proxy-pylon with my second scouting probe (first one died trying to scout which all-in was coming). I figured I was totally dead (all he had to do was lay down three spines at his now-mining natural which he had done... but too late! I warped in three zealots at my proxy pylon and killed off my forge so my main force could get out on the map. My three zealots arrived with three spines building and only a handful of unupgraded lings to fight them. I forced a cancel on all three spines just as my main army arrived. I forcefielded the ramp and killed his nat, but no drones. He countered through another nydus into my main so I retreated and built a robo, cleared the creep in my main attacked again and finally rebuilt my main nexus. I was able to trade cost-effectively at his natural and although he pushed me pack and killed one of my forward pylons, I trapped his roach army in front of my cannons and attacked off about 1.5 bases and 5-gates. I pushed his nat now with mining drones (because his main was getting mined out), trapped his drones down the ramp and took out his rebuilt natural and all the drones. His army was sizeable but I was able to afford enough reinforcements from my superior econ and eventually he rage-quit the game. I was fairly happy with myself :). |
Random players have no obligation to tell their opponents their race, just saying. |

im terran player all the way and noticed that for tvt, its just a matter of who plays the smartest: either 111 strat with marine drop or banshee rush or any other combo openings. when tvt goes macro its usually the one with more mineral base control who wins.
when i get tvp, i usually banshee rush protoss which is effective in most maps except the larger maps 1v1. i usually go all in on banshees but lately see that banshee with marine production off 1 rax is better. i usually go 1rax 1fac then 2 starport, with entrance blocked and with 1 bunker just in case. with tvz, i suck and dont know any 1 good strat. lucky enough to win if zerg player isnt so smart. i usually try the blind vikings build (no scouting, go direct vikings) and limit zerg's supply killing olords. sometimes works sometimes doesnt. another opening i try is build my 2nd cc to fortress pronto after 1 rax 1 eng bay 1bunker near the 2nd cc to support. overall though zerg just rolls me over once he gets his 3rd hatchery. is there any 1 great big strat how to win against zerg? i'll settle for good tips if there isnt |

Rockman, please do not necro threads that are dead. A thread is considered dead if the last post has a date instead of a time/day stamp on it.
It is against forum rules to necro dead threads: http://sea.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/13611374 (see rules under 'bumping) |

I'm a protoss player with a long way to go with my micro, and a friend of mine offerd to help me (he always wins, even if he's playing with his of race) Any way, he went terran and traped me in my expo with Mass Marines and tanks, i got clossi out SECONDS before he decided he was ready to kill me. i fried the marines from the high ground and stared to push out. he had me traped in with two armys of tanks and marins, and had an MMM death ball coming up the center map, i built a stargate to make phonixs to deal with his medivacs, and i suddnly had the idea to build a mothership( i thought it wasent gonna work but it was worth a shot) i hid my mothership as he finally took out my expo and used my 7 clossi with mass stalkers and phonixs under the cover of the cloaking feild. somehow, i trashed hes army and made it all the way down to his main. (He had vikings and a raven waiting for me) Via some mircale, i burnt up all the marines, shot down the vikings then the gg showed up.
